Major Themes in the Iliad
Many of the Iliad's themes center around war, warriors, and their characteristics such as valor and duty, but there are abundant other rich threads including humor, aging, love and lust. The motifs mentioned here are generally major ones which recur in the poem. Not included here are threads which pervade the poem's similes, as opposed to its action. By and large, the similes pertain to natural phenomena such as storms, wildfires and wild animals, and to peacetime activities such as agriculture, herding, fishing, and hunting.
